[M-AS 5] Two decades of Thai HPB Surgery Society; Past, present and future

HPB surgery is well recognized as one of the most complex and difficult surgical sub-specialty in terms of surgical technique and perioperative care. The majority of the HPB patients in Thailand were managed in tertiary or university hospitals, which resulted in inadequate competency of the graduated general surgeons to perform major hepatectomy or pancreaticoduodenectomy independently. In the past, most of the Thai HPB surgeons were limited to university hospitals and still needed to study abroad in the United States, Europe, Japan, South Korea, or China for more complex HPB training. The Thai Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery Society (THPBS) was organized in year 2000 by 14 HPB surgeons who practice in the university hospital. There were 300 surgeons who registered as members at the first stage of society. The main activities were educational conferences including inter-hospital conferences, annual society meetings, and take part in the HPB session of the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand meeting. THPBS had also received the opportunity to be a host for the 2nd Biennial Congress of the A-PHPBA 2009 in Bangkok. THPBS also encourages the young members to participate in the international HPB meeting by granting the scholarship for the members who submit the abstract presentations. So far, there are approximately 60 HPB surgeons who work in tertiary and university hospitals. The HPB fellowship training in Thailand has started since 2011, and now, there are just six centers that provide HPB fellowship training which results in increasing 13 HPB surgeons each year. The number of HPB surgeons in Thailand still cannot meet the demand of the country's healthcare system, which liver cancer is the highest incidence cancer. Encouraging the young general surgeons to gain more HPB surgical experience is one of the missions of THPBS, and we still strongly support opening the new HPB fellowship program in our country. THPBS always supports, encourages, and promotes the Thai HPB community to provide the excellence of care in the HPB spectrum including laparoscopic/ robotic hepatectomy and pancreaticoduodenectomy, adult/ pediatric living donor liver transplantation, which have the comparable outcomes with the benchmark Asian and western countries. Hopefully in the future, the THPBS can be a part in Asian collaboration for HPB research which includes translational and clinical studies, and a part of exchange fellowship HPB training program. We are also looking for the opportunity to be a host for the upcoming regional and international HPB meeting in the near future. Finally, it is such a great honor and great opportunity to be the host of The 10th Biennial Congress of A-PHPBA 2025 in Bangkok in October 2025.
