[VS 4] From Mansoura to Seoul: A step in HPB surgery
Ahmed SHEHTA
Department Of Surgery, Mansoura University, Mansoura University, Egypt

As a junior staff in Mansoura University, I was searching for a good opportunity to improve the surgical skills and practice in HPB surgery and finish my PhD degree through mutual supervision. I was lucky to get acceptance mail from Prof Han in Seoul National University Bundang Hospital to join his team. This was my first step to understand the real meaning of mentorship and professorship. I had several chances to observe and assist in operations which were so helpful to better understand the modern concepts of HPB surgery. These includes minimal invasive liver, pancreas and bile duct surgeries, and laparoscopic donor hepatectomy. Also, I had the chance to attend several weekly MDT meetings to discuss complex cases to provide the best care for the patients. Also, it was an excellent chance to explore research work including basic and clinical research. I was lucky to summarize data regarding liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma including laparoscopy and open approach. These data were so helpful to finish my PhD degree. Also, I could experience several chances to present the research work in international conferences and meet the world experts of HPB surgery. Finall, an excellent chance to get support from senior staff and having several friends from all over the world. To conclude, Korean experience had a great impact on both personal attitude and professional practice. Korean experience greatly improved my surgical skills and practice together with the research opportunities. Long-term mentorship and friendship are the real benefits.
